Fakarava | Monday, Sep 08, 2025 | Monday, Sep 08, 2025 |
An hour and a half flight from Papeete, rectangular-shaped Fakarava is a charming village, home to most of the atoll's 248 inhabitants. The only other - sort of - settlement (10 people ) is on Tetamanu Motu Islet located opposite the lagoon next to the smaller but prettier pass. Fakarava's immense lagoon has several black pearl farms, idyllic white sand beaches and is peppered with small islands, homes to many breeds of nesting birds oblivious to visitors.

Atuona | Thursday, Sep 11, 2025 | Thursday, Sep 11, 2025 |
Above the steady rumble of the Pacific surge, the sharply sculpted mountains of Hiva Oa hide their summits in the mists of rain-filled clouds. The largest and most fertile island in the southern group of the Marquesas, Hiva Oa has deep valleys, lush plateaus and thickly wooded forests. The town of Atuona is the administrative center for the southern Marquesas. Framed in a theater of mountains with the Bay of Traitors providing safe anchorage, Atuona is a favorite port of call for yachts and copra ships. Atuona has a gendarmerie, small hospital, post office, banks, weather station, Ait Tahiti office, pensions, restaurants and snack bars, stores and chops, telephones and TV. There is a Catholic mission with a boarding school and a Protestant church. A path up the cliffs behind the village leads to Calvary Cemetery - the site of simple graves of two men who chose the Marquesas as their final home and resting place, the French painter Paul Gauguin and Belgian singer Jacques Brel.
Hapatoni, Tahuata, Marquesas | Friday, Sep 12, 2025 | Friday, Sep 12, 2025 |
The smallest of the Marquesas archipelago, at only 19 square miles, Tahuata is a leaf-shaped volcanic island with sheer cliffs, white-sand beaches, lush vegetation, twin bays—and a turbulent colonial history. You’ll call on Hapatoni, a charming, seafront village with an ancient paved royal walkway shaded by tamanu trees. Visit the huge Catholic church, built by the Vatican and decorated with stunning stained-glass windows and beautiful local carvings. Admire traditional carvings at the crafts center. And enjoy fine swimming and snorkeling in the only Marquesas island edged by coral reef.
Taiohae, Marquesas | Saturday, Sep 13, 2025 | Saturday, Sep 13, 2025 |
Atop a green peak bordering the bay at Nuka Hiva is a statue of Virgin Mary (984 ft above sea level). In the valley is the Naniuhi "tahua", a meeting place for pre-Christian Marquesans, including a dance platform, ceremonial stones and petroglyphs carved in boulders. Taipivai Valley has numerous waterfalls, a long river and one of the best preserved archeological sites in the Marquesas including several tiki. Anaho Bay and its golden sand beach has great swimming and is one of the loveliest spots in the Marquesas with only six families living in the valley. Don’t miss the sculptures of Taiohae. They are unquestionably the most skilled wood and coconut craftspeople in French Polynesia. Taiohae is a pleasant village bordering the sea with French and Territorial administrators, government buildings, gendarmerie, post office, general hospital, town hall, Air Tahiti office, and well-stocked stores and shops. It lies on the south coast at the head of the Bay of Taiohae whose entrance is guarded by two rocks called "Les Sentinelles" Motu Nui to the west and Matauapuna to the East.

Huahine | Tuesday, Sep 16, 2025 | Tuesday, Sep 16, 2025 |
Less visited than the other Society Islands, Huahine maintains more of the traditional pace of life. There are ancient temples to explore, vanilla plantations to view or drives into the hinterlands in 4-wheel-drive-vans. The coral reefs offshore are excellent for snorkeling.
Bora Bora | Wednesday, Sep 17, 2025 | Wednesday, Sep 17, 2025 |
Bora Bora is considered one of the most romantic places anywhere. Dominant from the moment of arrival are majestic Mount Otemanu and Mount Pahia, two towering volcanic peaks of black rock jutting out of the center of the emerald-green island. Often shrouded in clouds, these landmarks take on mysterious and mythical qualities. Off-road excursions, bicycling, and hiking into this wild beauty reveal incredible panoramas and valleys. Hundreds of brilliantly-colored fish, intricate gardens, and clear water also create some of the very best undersea worlds. For an exhilarating expedition, swim with and watch local divers feed small, non-dangerous lagoon sharks. Bora Bora has several ancient temples and authentic Polynesian villages. There are also some reminders of World War II with a number of cannon emplacements left behind by the U.S. Navy.
Taha'a Motu Mahana | Thursday, Sep 18, 2025 | Thursday, Sep 18, 2025 |
Enclosed in a common lagoon with Raiatea and accessible only by boat, Taha"a produces about 80% of all vanilla in French Polynesia. Taha"a is the only island in the Society Islands that can be completely circled by ship inside the protected lagoon. With its many deep bays and small deserted motu on the reef, Taha"a is an ideal island to escape the 20th century. Here you can explore the reef and discover the beauty of its multicolored lagoon, enjoy a picnic on a deserted motu or ride a 4X4 in the mountains and through the vanilla plantations and learn the mystery of these "orchids". With only a handful of guesthouses and two small hotels, Taha"a is slowly awakening to tourism and yet it still maintains an authentic flavor of Polynesia.
Moorea | Friday, Sep 19, 2025 | Friday, Sep 19, 2025 |
This magical island is what inspired James Michener to write about mythical "Bali Hai." The rugged mountains rise dramatically from the ocean and stand guard over this lush island that features everything from white sandy beaches to pineapple plantations to cascading waterfalls to secluded coves. A trip through the lushly-forested inland to Le Belvedere lookout opens a breathtaking view of deep blue waters of Cook's and Opunohu bays, which are the perfect anchorages for luxury yachts and sailboats alike. Horseback riding on the beach, bicycling and hiking into the mountains, deep-sea fishing, sailing, scuba diving, para-sailing, and much more awaits.

Pregnant guests under six months (24 weeks) must provide a doctor’s written permission prior to sailing that states she is fit to travel by sea and air (if Paul Gauguin Cruises booked their air). This must be faxed to Reservations, Attn: Special Requests-Medical at 1(425)732-7198. The fax must reference the Guest’s name, ship name, and sailing date. The permission must be dated within 30 days of the cruise departure date. This will also have an impact on the connection speed.

Review: There was a great, friendly atmosphere on board. High quality facilities. Will travel on this ship again some day.
Small ship, great staff, wonderful food, and friendly personalized service.
Pros: Small ship, great staff, wonderful food, and friendly personalized service.
Cons: excursion desk closed too often. Could have gone to more islands. Rooms are smaller than most newer ships.
Review: The cruise provided a more authentic Tahitian experience than other ships I have taken in the area. The ship is not as new or flashy as some of the newer ships, but the service and food were the best we have ever experienced on a cruise.
Excellant service from the crew/staff; great food; good accommodations; good selection of excursions.
Pros: Excellant service from the crew/staff; great food; good accommodations; good selection of excursions.
Cons: Some tours were conducted in both English and French at the same time and it made it difficult to keep up with the sightseeing. Also, see Comments for a serious problem we encountered
Review: On disembarkation day, the PG staff placed all the luggage from the ship in an area of the pier that was/is poorly protected from the weather. Unfortunately, there was a heavy rain storm that morning (no surprise there - November is the beginning of the rainy season in Tahiti) and as a consequence most of the luggage got soaked. Unless you had a hard-shell suitcase, you went on to your next destination with bags of damp/wet clothing. PG should have known better given their long experience with travel in French Polynesia.
Small ship, 5 star service. Contemporary furnishings.
Pros: Small ship, 5 star service. Contemporary furnishings.
Cons: Older ship. Could use some updating. Carpets spotty. There's quite a bit of movement once the ship is in open waters.

Review: Just got back and we had an awesome trip. The Society Islands are like old Hawaii before it became Americanized. Remote and friendly. The Paul Gauguin is a beautiful ship with a friendly and attentive staff. They provide lots of activities both on and off the ship. Perfect cruise for active people who want to dive, snorkel and hike or if you just want to relax by the pool or enjoy the culture you can do that, too.

The staff is outstanding. The itinerary should be on everyone's bucket list.
Pros: The staff is outstanding. The itinerary should be on everyone's bucket list.
Cons: The necessity for tendering at each port is a small inconvenience. The ship is showing its age in a few areas like some of the public bathrooms have just a sink with exposed pipes instead of a vanity with some counterspace.

Review: Due to weather forecasts, our itinerary was changed without pre-boarding notice...most heard about the change via word of mouth. However, the PG Travel desk people were there to help everyone make any excursion changes for both ship & independent tours. They emailed independent tour operators & communicated all options to the passengers. We didn't miss any pre-booked tour. Even one tour refunded the $$ immediately. Service was unbelievable.

Cons: Did not think the food was "excellent" if compared with other 5 Star Cruise lines.
Review: Liked the idea of the Gauguins and Gauguines! Friendly and helpful and always willing to share information on their country! Bridge tour was great and impressed that the Galley tour was conducted by the Chief Chef, who recognized and came by at dinner. Missed many of the lectures as they were timed during the mornings when tours were scheduled. Tenders were well manned and prompt.

Pros: Staff, destinations, food, the smaller ship, great lecturers on board and how organized everybody was on the ship. It was a real plus to have free drinks of all kinds and to have the gratuities pre-paid.
Cons: The only negative was some upholstery in the cabins and out on the back of the pool deck needed to be replaced, The other comment that kept coming up was that all clients felt thet the inter-net charges should be absorbed into the cost of the cruise instead of being charged for separately. With the service being rather slow, we did not feel that it was cost effective.

Review: If you love islands, this is a wonderful cruise for you. Loved to finally see the remote Marquesas Islands. Not a lot of swimming there, but we visited archeological sites and shopped for the unique art and jewelry. The ship had three good speakers, one of which is an expert on pacific island culture and archeology. There are also several young Island Entertainers called the Gauguins and Gauguines who dance and host many events onboard. Once on an island there are many excursions to choose from if you want some activity or you can just walk around. The ship carries about 300 passengers and is very comfortable. Sometimes we were alone on the stern watching the blue blue ocean go by. There is never a feeling of being crowded and several restaurants to choose from. Part of the Itinerary goes to several of the Society Islands and they and their people are all so beautiful. Its easy to fly to Tahiti and things there seem safe and small. It was like going back in time 100 years. The boat is not formal and it is easy to meet people. The boat is very clean and our maid cleaned our room several times a day. We don't drink but all the drinks are free. There is an afternoon tea everyday at 4pm. So many perks! There is a spa, gym, boutique, and small pool.
