Prague | Wednesday, May 22, 2024 | Wednesday, May 22, 2024 |
Amid Prague's cobblestone streets and gold-tip spires, galleries, cafes, and clubs teem with young Czechs and "expatriates." New shops and restaurants have opened, expanding the city's culinary reach beyond the traditional roast pork and dumplings. The arts and theater also thrive in Prague. Young playwrights regularly stage their works, weekly poetry readings are standing room only, and classical music maintains famous standards, while the clubs are jammed. The arts - nonverbal theater, "installation" art, world music - are as trendy in Prague as in any European capital but possess distinctive Czech flavor. All of this is set against a stunning backdrop of towering churches and centuries-old bridges and alleyways. Prague achieved much of its glory in the 14th century, during the long reign of Charles IV, king of Bohemia and Moravia and Holy Roman Emperor. Charles established a university in the city and laid out the New Town, charting Prague's growth. Prague Castle is the most popular sight and is the largest ancient castle in the world with three courtyards.

Bamberg | Friday, May 24, 2024 | Friday, May 24, 2024 |
Bamberg is a historical yet dynamic city. It is a town of complementary tradition and progress. The locals like to stress their city spreads across seven hills like Rome, has a network of waterways like Venice, and an old city which is at least as beautiful as Prague and on which the same architects left their unmistakable mark. Old Town Hall, which parts the flow of the River Regnitz, can only be reached by two stone bridges; the Romanesque/Gothic Cathedral is endowed with four unique towers; the picturesque fishermen's houses of "Little Venice" prop each other up on the river bank and the magnificent New Residence boasts a splendid baroque room known as the Emperor's Hall. In summer, Bamberg's beer cellars or "Keller" are a special attraction. The locals and tourists appreciate a locally brewed beer and savor a typical Franconian snack. Bamberg is lovely for those who also enjoy a stroll. The possibilities are many and include the Hain, an extensive wooded park on the periphery, or the pretty paths along the canals and the River Regnitz.

Visit the cathedral, the Neumünster church, the Marienkapelle and the old town hall. The true highlight is the former episcopal residence built from 1719 to 1744. This splendid example of German Baroque architecture is the most important secular building of the period. It features a grand staircase with a magnificent fresco by Giovanni Tiepolo.
Wertheim | Monday, May 27, 2024 | Monday, May 27, 2024 |
Wertheim is an important city with a historic past that has remained true to its medieval roots. Wertheim's claim to fame is its fabulous castle ruins. Positioned on the cornerhills between the rivers, the Burg Wertheim appears quite striking on first glance, leaving little indication of the many times it has been conquered, destroyed, and rebuilt. The Pointed Tower (Spitzeturm) is the most prominent of the city towers still standing.

Mainz | Tuesday, May 28, 2024 | Tuesday, May 28, 2024 |
Mainz is located on the left bank of the Rhine, across from the Rhine's intersection with the Main River. It is thought that there may have been wine-producing vines in the area even before the coming of the Romans in 38 B.C., although it was from that time that the regions of the Rheingau and Rheinhessen became widely known for fine viticulture. At the beginning of the Christian era, a bridge connected the settlement on the Rhine's left bank and the Roman fortifications opposite. In the 8th century, the town became a primary archbishopric. Over the centuries, church politics and a series of wars shuffled control of the city back and forth between the French and various German factions. Today Mainz is a bustling city, with a prosperous trade in wine and other businesses.
Rudesheim | Tuesday, May 28, 2024 | Tuesday, May 28, 2024 |
Rüdesheim is located in the heart of the Rhine river area at the southern entrance to the Lorelei valley. This romantic holiday town offers much to visitors seeking a fabulous German experience. As you cruise down the Rhine, if you listen carefully, you just might hear the siren calling as you pass the Rock of Lorelei. One attraction to visit is the Niederwald monument. Erected between 1877 and 1883, this huge monument symbolizes the re-establishment of the German Empire and unity. From Rudesheim, one can either take the foot path to the monument or the cablecar leading to the top. The panoramic views from the top are spectacular. Rudesheim is also famous for the Abbey of St. Hildegard. Some think the building is older than it is, but truly, it was built at the beginning of the 20th century. Other sites to see are the Wine Museum in Broemserburg Castle, Siegfried's Mechanical Music Instruments Museum and the Medieval Torture Museum, which boasts a wide collection of medeival relics.
Cochem | Wednesday, May 29, 2024 | Wednesday, May 29, 2024 |
This medieval town, located in one of the best wine regions of the Mosel Valley, is crowded against the left bank of the river by a huge vineyard-covered hill. Because of its large number of inns, Cochem is your best choice for an overnight stopover between Koblenz and Trier. The town is a typical wine village, with tastings and festivals. But the biggest attraction is Reichsburg Cochem, a huge castle at the top of the mound behind the town. The original 1027 structure was almost completely destroyed by Louis XIV's army in 1689. It has since been restored according to the original ground plans, and its medieval ramparts and turrets create a dramatic backdrop for the town.
Bernkastel | Thursday, May 30, 2024 | Thursday, May 30, 2024 |

Luxembourg | Friday, May 31, 2024 | Friday, May 31, 2024 |
Multilingualism is one of the assets of the Grand Ducal capital. Visitors may be ushered in with a hearty â€Moiënâ€, as the natives stick to their mother tongue, â€Lëtzebuergeschâ€, now as before. Placed in the heart of Europe, Luxembourg has matured into an economic and cultural center. The modern edifices of the European Institutions on the Kirchberg Plateau or the futuristic bank head offices lining Boulevard Royal bear witness to progress the city has made. The media world has found a home here, just like the circles of the specialist conventions or international conferences. Many great names, from Goethe or Victor Hugo to William Turner, used to think highly of Luxembourg hospitality and open-mindedness. Therefore, visitors should feel at ease in a cosmopolitan city stamped by the spell of smallness, visible at a glance.
Reims | Friday, May 31, 2024 | Friday, May 31, 2024 |
Reims is a region known for Champagne production, picturesque rolling hills and vineyards, and its proximity to Paris. Its champagne, the very symbol of sophistication, graceful living and celebration, is produced nowhere else in the world. Sightseeing centers around Reims and its Notre-Dame Cathedral, the heart of France's royal history where twenty-five kings were crowned. This Gothic structure is one of France's most magnificent churches, and some would place its rose windows among the best in the world. South of the Champagne vineyards is Troyes, once one of Europe's most magnificent cities. This capital of the Counts of Champagne is lined with beautifully-preserved half-timbered houses built during the 16th Century. North of Reims are the French Ardennes where Europe's sometimes bloody history has been decided on the fields of Sedan, Argonne and Châlons-sur-Marne, along the rivers Meuse and Marne. Visit all of Reim's attractions, including St. Remi Museum and Basilica, Palais du Tau, Surrender room, Fine Arts Museum, and La Pompelle Fort.

Pros: Nice ports
Cons: Lots of bus time
Review: The Alsvin is very nice. Seems a little short staffed compared to other Viking boats we've been on. We never had to get our own drinks at the bar in the lounge like we often had to here. One of Viking's selling points is that they dock right in the center of cities. Pretty much true on their Amsterdam to Basel and Passau to Budapest cruises. Paris to Prague felt more like a bus tour than a riverboat cruise. Aside from the 4 hr ride from Paris to Triere and Nuremberg to Prague, we pretty much had a bus ride to/from town every day. Only in one or two towns were we close enough to walk into town. The tours were all nice, but they could cut the time at the palace in Prague shorter since you are just walking around the courtyard. More free time would have been nicer. Overall, it's very nice.
Too many to list here- great ship, outstanding crew & crew to guest ratio!
Pros: Too many to list here- great ship, outstanding crew & crew to guest ratio!
Cons: The only con was having to pick from all the opportunities since you can't do it all.
Review: Our Viking voyage on the Alsvin lived up to everything Viking promoted it to be. My wife and I felt like we were cradled through our first vacation in Europe. In addition to the regular local tours the Program Director added a "leisure" group for those who were not as mobile or fast so they could tour at a more relaxed pace and avoid stairs & hills, and he added an "energetic" group for those who wanted to move quickly and have more free time after doing the tour. Advice to future travelers: watch for the sign-up date for optional excursions and register quickly. We had one fill-up before we did. It turned out to be fine as we met friends that afternoon for a lovely day. I can't say enough good things about our trip on the Viking Alsvin.
Excellent tour guides, beautiful ship, great food, terrific service and wonderful tour director
Pros: Excellent tour guides, beautiful ship, great food, terrific service and wonderful tour director
Cons: Occasionally rushed for free time while in port
Review: Our cruise director Jane was fantastic! She was calm under pressure and did a great job making sure that people were happy and things ran smoothly. I found our standard cabin very comfortable because it wash
