Passau | Saturday, May 11, 2024 | Saturday, May 11, 2024 |
In the third millennium, Passau was considerably enlarged by the prince bishops of Passau, who made it their royal residence and capital of the largest Danube diocese. The wonderful Baroque buildings dominating the city today were built after a fire of 1662. One of the most striking is cathedral of St. Stephan, with the world's biggest church organ. One of the best ways to enjoy the magic of Passau is with a sightseeing tour. Other sights to see include: Neue Residenz - an Episcopal palace; Veste Oberhaus - Citadel of the prince bishops with the best view of the Old Town and confluence of the three rivers; Town Hall, which is lavishly decorated halls with monumental paintings; Niedernburg Abbey - tomb of Gisela, first queen of Hungary; Maria Hilf - an abbey and place of pilgrimage overlooking the town center; Dreiflusse-Eck - the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz; and St. Nikolai - a University church with Romanesque crypt.
Linz | Saturday, May 11, 2024 | Saturday, May 11, 2024 |
This Roman-built capital city is an important trade town along the Danube. For people interested in its past, it has an impressive list of important historical figures who have passed through or made Linz their home. Friedrich III, the Hapsburg Emperor, spent his last days in Linz, and for a time it was the most important city in the empire. Adolph Hitler went to school here for a brief period of time before moving on. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote his Symphony No. 36 in Linz, and today it is called the Linz Symphony. Sights to see include the Dreifaltigkeitssäule - a monument constructed in memorial of the people who died in the plague epidemics. There are several museums and castles in the area as well. Once in Linz, you'll understand why it was such a place of historical significance.

Budapest | Tuesday, May 14, 2024 | Tuesday, May 14, 2024 |
Caught between eastern and western Europe, Budapest has a character uniquely its own. It's also the last cheap, civilised city in Europe. Budapest can seem like one big sight, with each phase in its history, from the Ottoman period until the Communist days and from renaissance to revolution, leaving its mark on the city. For the tourist, a trip to Hungary's capital is dominated by the majestic sights of Buda. In the summer, there are open-air festivals at Szeged, Diosgyor Castle in Miskolc, Gyor and Pecs. Visit the former Royal Palace complex, the Matyas templom and the Belvaros. Margaret Island is a giant recreational park and feels pleasantly separated from the city bustle. Hungarian National Gallery houses Hungarian art since the birth of the nation. Although Esztergom is Hungary's most sacred city, home of the Archbishop and the nation's biggest church, it has a real-life edge. The first-time visitor to Szeged is invariably struck by its space and grandeur. One's immediate impressions of Hungary's third largest provincial city are of greenery and plazas, of broad.

Pros: Wait staff went above and beyond

Small size and staff:guest ratio makes for intimate service
Pros: Small size and staff:guest ratio makes for intimate service
Cons: Cabin placement relative to engine noise
Review: Lovely trip. Ship is tastefully decorated, spotlessly clean, and service is outstanding. This trip I was on the second deck, well toward the stern, compared to the third deck on my previous cruises. I did note more engine noise and vibration but it wasn't an issue. Actually, it was pretty soothing. And there was no noticeable noise from the deck above. My only issue is, as a solo traveler, waivers and extras are hit and miss, even for a repeat customer. My travel advisor was able to pursue an upgrade but still, there were several empty cabins on this sailing so the line was a little stingy as far as I'm concerned.
Nice clean small vessel with a great staff , great food and lots of activities
Pros: Nice clean small vessel with a great staff , great food and lots of activities
Cons: Tiny swimming pool on top deck. Some tour guides were a lot better than others
Review: My wife and I are retired and in our late 60's and we had a great week long river cruise on the Danube. The ship is small enough to become quickly acquainted with staff and other passengers. there was a nice assortment of daily activities to be as busy as you wanted to be or just sit back and relax. They tried to accommodate all levels of physical activity from gentle walkers, to hikers and bikers. All 3 meals each day had a good selection of items with new daily specials. We enjoyed the food and staff. The entertainment after dinner was good but not great. Rooms were small but clean and comfortable. Overall a great experience.
Great fun, great food, great service
Pros: Great fun, great food, great service
Cons: room had a mildew smell

Review: First River cruise. Loved the smaller ship and fewer passengers.
Loved the small group of 156 people on board the ship. Loved the fact that 90 of those people were on the pre 3 day excursion in Prague, so we met many people that were on our cruise before we started. Loved that the Cruise director spent the 3 days in prague with us. Loved everything about the cruise

Review: This was an unbelievable 10 days trip. Yes we had to change itinerary a bit due to low water on the Danube, but the changes made by the cruise director were great . Tough job to change itinerary on such short notice and still make the excursions perfect. We probably will never go back to a large ship again after doing this cruise. It's very personable. You get to know pretty much every staff member on the ship on a personal basis. Ama was a great company to do the cruise with also and we probably will not even try one of the others when this was already so great. Dejan was such a great cruise director. We would love to do another cruise with him. We already put down a deposit for our next cruise with Ama.
Everything
Pros: Everything
Cons: None
Review: Ship, crew, & itinerary were absolutely fantastic. AmaWaterways and the AmaSonata were first class from start to finish.
The staff was extremely friendly and very professional. They always had a smile on their face and eager to help.
Pros: The staff was extremely friendly and very professional. They always had a smile on their face and eager to help.
Cons: Not a lot of on board activities.
Review: This was our second cruise on AMA and will look forward to booking another one in a year. The ship was very comfortable, staff was great. The tours were informative and fun. Great that the tours had different levels of walking. I was babying a bad knee and the gentle walkers was just what I needed. If I had a complaint, it would be that I thought the food was to salty for my taste. The presentation of the food was spot on.
Sonja, Cruise Manager was excellent. Most excursions were excellent.
Pros: Sonja, Cruise Manager was excellent. Most excursions were excellent.
Cons: Radisson Blue hotel in Lucerne was terrible! Need to find a new one.
Review: AmaWaterways was very accommodating to all passengers fitness abilities. All excursions had tour guides for active walkers, regular, and slower walkers with no steps. Plus hiking tours and bicycling tours, very impressive. Everything was very well done. My only complaint would be they had no mint to make Mojitos, the only thing I drink! Also as everywhere, they have every kind of coffee for folks but make little effort for tea drinkers. I prefer Chia Lattes which I could make with their machines but they do not offer Chia tea bags!
fewer passengers
Pros: fewer passengers
Cons: not time for shows for evening entertainment
Review: The musical tour in thd evening is not worth the time. Some tours had too much free time before heading back to ship.
Loved the Zurich and Lucerne pre cruise stay
Pros: Loved the Zurich and Lucerne pre cruise stay
Cons: Wished we had more small towns as stops on the cruise
Review: Had a great cruise. The two (2) weeks went by very fast. The three (3) days in Zurich and two (2) days in Lucerne were great. Switzerland is a beautiful country. As my brother who works for the US Government says it is "Gods" country.

Food, service, wines, cabins
Pros: Food, service, wines, cabins
Cons: Tour sizes, bus rides
Review: Amazing cruise, best ship on the river. Everything exceeded our expectations!! Every meal was a 5 star experience. The wines were all excellent and from local vineyards. Staff excellent and went out of there way to make everything perfect! I don't think there can be a better river cruise than with AmaWaterways. Their ships are far superior to other lines we saw during the cruise.
Everything went smoothly as expected.
Pros: Everything went smoothly as expected.
Cons: No medical on board or someone who is trained to help in emergency.
