Where did the airfare rates go? Since January 2012 the Department of Transportation requires all advertised rates to include taxes & fuel surcharges. We welcome the new requirement as it helps you, the consumer, to make an informed decision without any surprises. However, taxes and fuel surcharges vary from city to city and change on a daily basis. We would not be able to manually verify every tax and city-pair on a daily basis and update our website.

Here are a few tips on how you can save on your next international flight:

• Book early! Airlines release the best specials about 4 months prior to departure and even earlier for the Holiday Season
• Avoid weekends (Thursdays - Sundays) and save up to $60 per person
• Be flexible and try to leave shortly before seasonality changes to a more expensive fare (The outbound flight often determines the seasonality)
• Pay by check: Some of our contracted airfares have to be paid by check, but you are getting a lower fare and children discounts, which are no longer available on published airfares

Lufthansa as part of the Star Alliance, now allows you to mix and match transatlantic flights on their partner airlines. You could fly on Lufthansa to Frankfurt and return from Zurich on Swiss. Partner airlines include United Airlines, Continental, Swiss, Austrian Airlines & Air Canada. this gives you more flexibility and options. Rates on Star Alliance members are divided in 3 seasons: Low (beginning of November through end of March - Holidays excluded) / Shoulder (beginning of April through mid May & beginning of September through end of October as well as the Holiday Season) / High (mid May through beginning of September).

Air Berlin, Germany's 2nd largest Airline has nonstop flights to Duesseldorf & Berlin from New York, Miami, Fort Meyers, Los Angeles, Las Vegas & San Francisco. They offer great connections to other German & European cities. Instead of seasonality, they offer fares based on one-ways. Advantage: If leaving in high season, but returning in low season, your fare will be less expensive, as the combination of a more expensive outbound and a less expensive return results in a overall lower fare. You can also book reasonable one-way fares to or from Europe.

Air New Zealand offers nonstop flights from Los Angeles to London, with excellent connections to other European & German cities.
